Smart Alert: Loss of Cooling

Open doors/windows

Check to make sure no doors or windows are open. If the weather is nice, you can switch the system mode “Off” and leave the windows/doors open.

Not cooling

The thermostat does not know whether the cooling system is on or not. If the set temperature is below the room temperature, it will attempt to turn on your cooling system, but if there’s a system issue, it won’t actually turn on.

  • Go to a vent.
  • Put your hand in front of it.
  • If you feel cold air, your cooling system is on.
    • Reset the thermostat and let the cooling system turn back on.
    • If you continue to receive these types of alerts while your cooling system is on, your HVAC system may not be sized appropriately for your space. Consult an HVAC professional.
  • If you feel no air or lukewarm air, then your cooling system may not be turning on with the thermostat.

Check physical thermostat

Room temperature sensor

Every Sensi thermostat has an area that needs to be kept clean and unobstructed to accurately measure the temperature in your room. The sensor area is different on each Sensi model, but it’s usually on the side of the thermostat cover. There are a few open areas in the plastic to let the sensor breathe.

Find the sensor on your thermostat, make sure it isn’t obstructed by dust or dirt. Wipe with a dry cloth or duster. Make sure the thermostat is not behind any bookshelf/painting/etc. that would also obstruct air flow.

Wire connections

Make sure all wires are tight in the terminal block and the wires are neatly tucked into the wall.

  • Remove the thermostat cover from the sub-base.
  • Tug each wire gently. No wire should feel loose or come out. If any feel loose or come out, screw them back down.
  • Make sure the wires are not touching each other. No bare wire should stick out from under screw terminals or touch another copper wire.
  • Make sure none of the wires are overlapping the plastic part of the sub-base. All wires should be tucked into the empty space and pushed back as far as you can in the wall.

Reset thermostat

Use this support article for instructions on how to reset your specific model. Allow 30-60 minutes for your thermostat to re-calibrate the room temperature completely.
